The government plans a major rail-cum-road bridge over the Karnaphuli River, linking Cox’s Bazar and Matarbari deep-sea port, to enhance connectivity up to the maritime frontier. The bridge, second in scale to the Padma Multipurpose Bridge, aims to replace the century-old Kalurghat Bridge. It will feature dual-gauge rails and a two-lane road. Korean development partner EDCF is set to fund a significant portion of the project. With a proposed cost of Tk 115.66 billion, the project awaits approval from the Planning Commission. Once initiated, construction is projected to conclude by December 2030, facilitating smoother railway communications and shortened travel time from Dhaka to Cox’s Bazar. The bridge design allows for train speeds up to 120km/h and road speeds of 65km/h, designed to accommodate a 25-tonne-axle load.
