Despite objections, the Internal Revenue Department (IRD) is taxing house rent for officers and employees of five state-owned commercial banks in Bangladesh, including Sonali, Agrani, Janata, Rupali, and Bangladesh Development Bank Limited (BDBL). The banks have unsuccessfully sought remedies from the Finance Department and IRD, arguing the tax’s unfairness. While government employee rents are tax-exempt, the IRD considers bank staff differently. This issue, unresolved for years, prompted the Financial Institutions Department to seek clarification from the IRD. The banks have decided to follow Employment Order No. 370 instead of No. 371. However, the IRD’s lack of response exacerbates the situation, leading to additional taxes and fines for affected bank officers and employees. Other state-owned banks like BKB and Rakab are exempt from such taxes.
