The government is considering organizing a high-powered inter-ministerial committee comprising relevant ministries and entities in the sector after its guidelines for buying electricity from solar irrigation pumps failed to receive enough input from stakeholders.
The guidelines aim to simplify solar pump operators’ ability to sell their idle electricity to distribution entities and purchase electricity from them. However, the “Grid Integration Guideline for Solar Irrigation Pump” has not significantly progressed in replacing diesel-fired pumps with solar-powered ones, resulting in approximately 6000 pumps being replaced. Another reason of failing is that this project are not that much attractive to farmers because of the model, that’s why they are not interested to buy. In this sense, an SREDA official stated that in order to ensure the success of the solar irrigation project, the power division is currently considering the formation of an inter-ministerial group to develop a business model.
