To meet surging gas demand, Bangladesh plans to purchase 24 liquefied natural gas (LNG) cargoes from Gunvor Singapore Pvt Ltd under a short-term contract, a first for the country. Each cargo, containing 33.60 lakh mmbtu LNG, will be priced based on the JKM index. The decision was approved by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, signaling a strategic shift towards short-term contracts amid fluctuating international LNG prices. The move comes as the country aims to bridge the gap between gas demand, currently at 3800-4000 mmcfd, and supply. Additionally, with two floating storage and regasification units (FSRUs) set to resume operations, Bangladesh anticipates a boost in gas supply.
