Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) recently finalized a grant agreement worth approximately ¥2,294 million (equivalent to Tk 165 crore) to enhance the Fish Landing Centre operated by the Bangladesh Fisheries Development Corporation (BFDC) in Cox’s Bazar District. The signing ceremony took place at the Economic Relations Division (ERD), as per an official statement. The project aims to upgrade infrastructure at the Fish Landing Centre in collaboration with BFDC, focusing on improving management capabilities among BFDC officials. Cox’s Bazar, home to 40% of artisanal fishers in Bangladesh, faces challenges due to natural disasters and aging facilities, hindering efficient fish landing. Moreover, factors like the influx of Forcibly Displaced Myanmar Nationals (FDMNs) and the COVID-19 pandemic have heightened the need for livelihood improvement and poverty reduction in the region. JICA has already conducted a feasibility survey, which yielded positive results such as improvements in the fisheries value chain through the project.
