Govt Set to Introduce Solar Irrigation

Industry: Agro Machineries, Solar & Alternative Energy

The government of Bangladesh is set to introduce solar irrigation as part of its efforts to reduce the number of diesel irrigation pumps in the agriculture sector. According to the State Minister for Power and Energy and Mineral Resources, there are approximately 12 lakh diesel irrigation pumps in the agriculture sector across the country that will be transformed into solar irrigation systems. This move aims to address the effects of climate change, with the government targeting the production of 4,000 megawatts (MW) of electricity from renewable energy sources by 2030.

However, experts have highlighted challenges such as land scarcity and insufficient investment as barriers to expanding renewable energy and electricity generation in Bangladesh. Despite these challenges, developed countries have been urging developing nations like Bangladesh to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and increase the use of renewable energy sources to mitigate the risks associated with climate change.
