The Bangladesh Bank auctioned 25 kilograms of gold, valued at nearly Tk18 crore, marking the first such auction in 16 years. The gold, seized by customs intelligence, was sold to Venus Jewellers after unsuccessful attempts to auction it in late 2022. The proceeds from the sale were deposited in Bangladesh Customs’ account. The last gold auction by the central bank occurred in July 2008, and auctions ceased for various reasons thereafter, including challenges in finding suitable bidders.
