Govt Crafting Flexible AI Law to Encourage Innovation

The government is in the process of formulating an artificial intelligence (AI) law that aims to strike a balance between fostering innovation and mitigating potential harm caused by unchecked use of such technologies, according to top government policymakers.

Speaking at a meeting organized by the ICT Division at the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC), the Law Minister emphasized the need for flexibility in the AI law to adapt to the evolving landscape of AI technology. He highlighted the importance of thorough discussions with stakeholders in drafting the law, ensuring that it addresses concerns while promoting innovation.

The State Minister for ICT underscored the government’s decision to formulate the AI act, considering both its risks and potential benefits. He emphasized the key considerations of regulation, innovation, expansion, and coordination in crafting the law, emphasizing the need for a cohesive approach to legislative efforts.

Orion Group has filed two defamation lawsuits against Desh Television, each seeking Tk 500 crore in damages, following the airing of false reports on September 17 and 24, 2024. The lawsuits, submitted on September 25, accuse the network of broadcasting baseless allegations about Orion's six power plants and its flagship Jatrabari-Gulistan Flyover project. The reports claimed that Orion embezzled government funds, laundered money abroad, and failed to supply electricity. Despite a formal rejoinder and legal notice from Orion, Desh Television did not rectify the inaccuracies.
