The recent issuance of licenses to three major cellphone operators in Bangladesh, namely Grameenphone, Robi, and Banglalink, to provide Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) services has sparked concerns within the country’s Internet Service Provider (ISP) industry. This move allows the cellphone operators to enter the lucrative Tk 10,000 crore broadband internet market, traditionally dominated by ISPs. The newfound competition from cellphone operators, who possess significant technological capacity, poses challenges for ISPs in maintaining their market position.
Previously, FWA services were exclusively provided by ISPs through wired connections. However, with the approval granted to cellphone operators, significant shifts are expected in the broadband internet business landscape of Bangladesh.
As per the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC), there are currently 2,897 licensed ISPs operating in the country, alongside approximately 3,000 illegal operators. The ISP industry contributes significantly to the economy, with an estimated annual income of Tk 10,000 crore and employment for five to six lakh individuals.
