The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) predicts that rice prices in Bangladesh won’t decrease in the marketing year (MY) 2024-25 due to high production costs. Labor wages increased by 30-40% during the Boro paddy planting season compared to the previous year. Coarse grain prices rose by 6.25% year-on-year, reaching Tk 50 to Tk 52 per kilogramme in Dhaka. Despite a good harvest, high-quality non-aromatic rice prices remained high at Tk 68.5 per kilogramme in March 2024. The USDA anticipates minimal rice imports for MY25, estimating around 50,000 tonnes, considering favorable weather conditions and increased overall acreage. Rice production for MY25 is forecasted to be around 3.77 crore tonnes, a 1.9% increase from the previous year, with improved yields from varieties like BRRI Dhan84 and BRRI Dhan92.
