Anisur Rahman, Managing Director of Basic Bank, has had his contract extended for another year amidst discussions of merging the state-owned bank with City Bank. The extension was approved by the Financial Institutions Department of the Ministry of Finance. While Bangladesh Bank has decided on the merger, regulations prevent the MD or Deputy MD of the weaker bank from joining the stronger one, prompting Rahman’s extension. Joined in 2021, Rahman’s tenure was extended as discontent among employees arose regarding the merger, leading to appeals against merging with private banks. With a background in Agrani Bank, Rahman brings extensive experience to his role. He holds degrees in Mathematics from Dhaka University and hails from Gopalganj.
