The Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) plans to expand its network to include 3.0 million farmers, providing them with direct access to agro-related weather forecasts. Supported by the World Bank, the ‘Bangladesh Agro-Meteorological Information System (BAMIS)’ project, in collaboration with Practical Action, aims to enhance its capacity. Currently, with 30,000 lead farmers, BAMIS intends to diversify its lead groups by including individuals from various grassroots sectors. The project’s impact assessment reveals significant benefits, such as crop savings during adverse weather conditions. Agro-climatic information is crucial for pest and disease management in crops. Given the erratic weather patterns, timely weather forecasts are vital for agriculture, which employs nearly 45% of Bangladesh’s workforce. BAMIS utilizes a web portal to disseminate meteorological data, providing agro-meteorological services and advisories.
