The Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) is heavily reliant on the pharmaceutical sector, which accounted for 20% of total transactions. Despite 291 companies being traded, the pharmaceutical industry’s turnover exceeded Tk 103 crore, representing over 19% of the DSE’s total turnover. Notably, no other sector surpassed Tk 100 crore in turnover. While textiles and food sectors also saw activity, the pharmaceutical sector’s dominance is evident, driven primarily by four key companies: Beacon Pharma, Asiatic Laboratories, Orion Infusion, and Central Pharma. These entities collectively contributed over Tk 103 crore, approximately 13.5% of the DSE’s total turnover. Concerns arise regarding market stability and dependency on a few firms, as fluctuations in their performance could significantly impact overall market transactions. Despite robust pharmaceutical sector transactions, the DSE’s main index fell by 6 points to 3,963 points, with an initial sharp decline later partially recovered, indicative of market volatility and fragility.
