Renowned economist Prof Rehman Sobhan criticized the lack of accurate data on non-performing loans (NPLs) in Bangladesh’s banking sector, attributing it to policy and regulatory failures. Speaking at a book launch event, he emphasized the need for a thorough analysis of banks’ balance sheets to uncover the true extent of NPLs. Despite promises, the government hasn’t disclosed the top defaulters’ list.
Sobhan highlighted discrepancies in loan treatment, pointing out favoritism and political influence. He called for rule-based institutions to replace deal-based operations, stressing the importance of credible institutions for attracting foreign direct investment. The book, “Is the Bangladesh Paradox Sustainable?”, explores Bangladesh’s growth amidst institutional challenges. Other speakers addressed corruption’s impact on Bangladesh’s growth trajectory and the necessity of institutional reforms for sustainable development.
