Bangladesh’s Imports from Qatar Surge to $2.74 Billion

Industry: Energy & Power, LNG
Economic Tag: Import

The relationship between Bangladesh and Qatar has evolved significantly since the year 2000, with substantial growth in bilateral trade, energy cooperation, and diplomatic ties. Initially, Bangladesh’s exports to Qatar were modest, valued at about $2.4 million in 2000, while imports stood at $4.5 million. However, over the years, Qatar has emerged as a key trade partner for Bangladesh, particularly in the energy sector.

By 2022, Bangladesh’s imports from Qatar had surged to $2.74 billion, primarily driven by products like liquefied natural gas (LNG) and fertilizers. In return, Bangladesh earned approximately $90 million from exporting various products and services to Qatar. This significant increase in bilateral trade underscores the growing economic ties between the two countries.

Diplomatic analysts attribute the recent advancements in Bangladesh-Qatar relations to increased diplomatic engagement and cooperation, particularly in the energy sector. Bangladesh has benefitted significantly from Qatar’s assistance in addressing its energy crisis, with imports of LNG playing a crucial role in meeting the country’s growing demand for gas. Additionally, Bangladesh has sought to expand cooperation with Qatar across various sectors, including infrastructure development, health, and defense.
