Bangladesh’s expenditure on importing edible oil and oilseeds has doubled in three years, reaching Tk 41,250 crore in FY 2022-23. Despite a 15% decrease in import costs to Tk 22,600 crore in the first seven months of the current fiscal year, prices rose due to global factors. Farmers responded by expanding oilseed cultivation; sunflower acreage increased, notably in coastal areas. The Department of Agricultural Extension reported sunflower cultivation on 2,100 hectares this year, part of a 27% increase in oilseed cultivation nationwide. The government aims to reduce import dependence through projects promoting mustard, sunflower, and groundnut cultivation, contributing to increased local production and decreased soybean oil demand. Encouraged by incentives, farmers are expanding oilseed cultivation, supported by agricultural officials’ efforts.
