Poultry farmers across Bangladesh are facing severe losses due to a prolonged heatwave since the beginning of April. The Bangladesh Poultry Association estimates that marginal farmers have collectively lost around Tk 200 crore over the past 10 days, with a decline in egg and chicken production by 4 to 10 percent. On average, farmers with at least 1,000 chickens are losing around 100 birds due to the heat. The extreme temperatures are causing chickens to eat less, leading to reduced egg production. Some farmers report daily egg production dropping from 900 to 650 pieces due to the heat. The heatwave, exacerbated by power outages, is jeopardizing investments in the poultry sector, with many farmers considering shutting down operations. The Department of Livestock Services emphasizes following heatwave advisories to mitigate losses, while meteorological authorities forecast the heatwave to continue, citing El Nino as a contributing factor to the unusually high temperatures.
