The Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant project is facing delays in its completion timeline. While the original plan aimed for the commissioning of Unit-1 by December 2022 and Unit-2 by October 2023, the deadline has been extended to 2027 due to various challenges.
The $12.65 billion project, with the majority of funding provided by Russia as soft loans, is facing obstacles such as the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Russia-Ukraine war, and delays in the construction of power transmission lines. Despite these setbacks, there is optimism that Unit-1 could be commissioned by December of this year, provided the transmission lines are ready. The project director expressed confidence in meeting this deadline if the Power Grid Company of Bangladesh (PGCB) completes the necessary transmission lines on time.
