Boro paddy cultivation covering 50.58 lakh hectares faces risks with 20% still in flowering stages, vulnerable to a heatwave exceeding 35 degrees Celsius. This jeopardizes rice grain formation as flowering and pollination are hindered by high temperatures, affecting grain filling at night. The current fiscal year’s production target for Boro rice is 2.22 crore tonnes, with only 6.5% of the harvest completed. Farmers can protect crops by ensuring adequate soil water retention, using chemical fertilizers moderately, and managing irrigation effectively. Additionally, mango and litchi production are at risk, especially litchi, where bud drop is occurring due to the heatwave, impacting flowering and bud formation. Commercial orchards fare better with regular irrigation, while family or community orchards face challenges due to inadequate irrigation management during heatwaves
