The salt industry in Bangladesh is experiencing a surge in production amid the ongoing heatwave, with nearly 84% of the revised production target achieved. This season, 40,695 farmers cultivated salt on 68,357 acres, aiming for 25.28 lakh metric tonnes of production to meet domestic demand. As of April 25, the country has already produced 21.18 lakh metric tonnes, a 9.8% increase compared to the same period in 2023. The heatwave has accelerated salt cultivation, reducing harvest time to as little as 2-3 days, benefiting from ideal weather conditions in Cox’s Bazar, the hub of salt production. Despite challenges like premature harvesting affecting salt quality, industry leaders are optimistic about surpassing last season’s record production of 22.30 lakh metric tonnes due to favorable weather conditions this year. Efforts are underway to reduce processing losses and improve overall salt quality through training programs for farmers.
