The construction of the second thermal power project at Matarbari in Cox’s Bazar has hit a roadblock due to a lack of funds after Japan withdrew its financing due to environmental concerns. The government is now exploring options to secure new funding, and if necessary, is considering financing the project internally.
Officials involved in the project have outlined that two power plants with a capacity of 600 megawatts each, totalling four units, were planned for Matarbari as part of a long-term strategy. Land acquisition and other preparatory works, including the construction of infrastructure such as boundary walls, buildings, and a coal import jetty, have been completed. The infrastructure of the first project’s two units (1200 MW) has been prepared for the second project.
