Potato prices have surged by at least 50% compared to last year due to lower production caused by Cyclone Michaung and late blight disease. Prices in Dhaka’s kitchen markets reached Tk 45-55 per kilogram, up from Tk 32-35 a year ago. The retail price increased by 17.65% in the past month and 49.25% from last year. Farmers reported a 30% production decrease due to late blight, leading to retail prices doubling to Tk 21 per kg. The country’s potato crop was cultivated on 4.58 lakh hectares with a production target of 1.16 crore tonnes, achieving 1.09 crore tonnes so far. Despite import permissions for 5.3 lakh tonnes, only 86,851 tonnes have been imported. The government aims to stabilize prices through mobile courts and meeting discussions on price regulation.
