Petrobangla, Bangladesh’s government-owned national gas company, is advocating for the deployment of full-time magistrates to conduct drives aimed at reducing the company’s system loss. They believe that regular enforcement actions will effectively curb illegal gas connections, which have been a persistent issue leading to substantial revenue losses.
Titas Gas Transmission and Distribution Company, one of the distribution companies, recently claimed a 14% reduction in system loss through consistent raids and enforcement efforts. However, other distribution companies continue to face challenges with gas theft due to limited campaign efforts. The importation of gas, alongside domestic distribution, adds pressure on the government’s finances, as significant foreign currency is required for gas imports. Continuous gas theft exacerbates financial losses, posing further challenges.
