The expansion of cotton farming in Bangladesh has been stagnant due to various factors such as limited farmland, manpower shortages, and insufficient government support for innovation and investment. Despite being the world’s second-largest supplier of apparel items, Bangladesh heavily relies on imported cotton for its garment industry.
Currently, domestic cotton production meets only 4% of the annual requirement for the country’s spinning mills, with the remaining cotton being imported. In fiscal 2021-22, Bangladesh imported cotton worth about $464.2 crore, highlighting its dependence on foreign sources.
The Cotton Development Board (CDB) attributes the slow growth in domestic cotton production to a lack of adequate research, manpower, land, and funds. Despite efforts to increase cultivation, cotton acreage has only seen a marginal annual growth of 1% over the past seven years.
