A new onion cold storage facility with a 400-tonne capacity has been inaugurated in Bhaluka, Mymensingh, aiming to mitigate the issue of onion shortage despite surplus production. The facility, funded by the Dutch government as part of the Onion Impact Cluster project, allows onions to be stored for 7-8 months. The agriculture minister highlighted the country’s annual onion production of 35 lakh tonnes, surpassing demand, but facing 20%-40% post-harvest losses. He emphasized the need for improved storage facilities to reduce dependency on imports, mainly from India. The private sector seeks government support to invest in such infrastructure. Despite over 400 cold storages in Bangladesh, mainly for potatoes, previous attempts at establishing onion cold storages faced challenges. The country’s annual onion imports of 5-7 lakh tonnes, mainly from India, underscore the significance of enhancing domestic storage capacities.
