During a heatwave, Bangladesh’s poultry industry suffered approximately Tk16,000 crore in losses. Daily egg losses ranged from Tk4-Tk5 crore, totaling Tk120-Tk150 crore, while layer farms faced a daily loss of Tk288 crore, totaling Tk8,640 crore over 30 days. Additionally, broiler chicken farms experienced a daily loss of Tk240 crore, totaling around Tk7,200 crore. Industry stakeholders anticipate potential price hikes for chicken and eggs next month. Chick production dropped by 10%, with mortality rates decreasing by 5-8%, while broiler chicks faced heatstroke with mortality rates of 7-8%. Measures like using cement sheets in sheds can mitigate losses. The government’s support is crucial to sustain the industry, as chickens continue to die daily from heatstroke, leading to a 12% decrease in egg and meat production. The industry seeks government assistance to address these challenges.
