Agricultural loan disbursement surged by 10.55% during the July-March period of FY 2023-24 compared to the same period last fiscal year. According to Bangladesh Bank data, agriculture and rural credit increased to Tk 266.67 billion in the third quarter of FY 2023-24 from Tk 241.22 billion in the same period of FY 2022-23. Scheduled banks disbursed Tk 29.76 billion in March this year, marking a substantial 17.36% growth over February disbursements. The outstanding balance of farm credit reached Tk 565.65 billion, a 10.31% increase from the same period last fiscal year.
To support farmers, the Bangladesh Bank instructed banks to disburse farm credit at a concessional interest rate of 4.0%, particularly for import-substitute crops like pulses, oilseed, spices, and maize. Farmers availed loans amounting to Tk 328.29 billion in FY 2022-23, with repayments totaling Tk 330.10 billion. However, due to challenges in reaching farmers directly, banks channel loan disbursements through NGOs, which often offer loans at higher interest rates.
