Egg prices in Dhaka have soared to Tk 160-165 per dozen, a ten-month high, impacting low-income consumers. This increase is attributed to supply shortages, rising input costs, and alleged market manipulation at the Tejgaon egg market. Prices rose by Tk 10-15 per dozen in a day and Tk 30-35 per dozen in a week. The government permitted egg imports last year during a previous price surge, but high import duties and falling domestic prices discouraged imports. The Bangladesh Poultry Association (BPA) President blamed traders in Tejgaon for gradually raising prices since May, with brown eggs’ wholesale price reaching Tk 11.90-12.40 per piece. Additionally, heatwaves in April reduced egg production, and increased costs of day-old chicks and feed further contributed to the price hike. Authorities seized millions of eggs from cold storages suspected of stockpiling for profit, urging better market management. Prices of other essentials like fish, meat, and vegetables have also risen, exacerbated by the local currency’s depreciation against the US dollar.
