In the first 10 months of fiscal year 2023-24, NBR faced a revenue deficit of Tk 26,263 crore, with the National Board of Revenue (NBR) falling short by Tk 46,263 crore from the original target. Despite achieving 70% of the revised annual revenue target, the NBR collected Tk 2,87,321 crore in customs and taxes, below the target of Tk 3,13,584 crore. The initial fiscal year target was Tk 4,30,000 crore, later revised to Tk 4,10,000 crore. While income tax collection saw a growth of 19.33%, VAT by 13.79%, and import taxes by 11.35%, none of the sectors met their targets, posing challenges in meeting IMF loan conditions and requiring strategic reforms for better revenue collection efficiency.
