The Directorate of National Consumers’ Rights Protection (DNCRP) has formed a committee to facilitate the return of Tk 127 crore stuck in payment gateways due to fraudulent activities by several e-commerce platforms during the pandemic. These platforms offered substantial discounts to attract customers, leading to advance payments of thousands of crores of taka.
In 2022, the central bank identified 25 online sellers, including Evaly, E-orange, Qcoom, Dhamaka, Aladinerprodip, Sirajganj Shop, Alesha Mart, and Dalal Plus, which collectively received Tk 6,050 crore in just four months through payment gateways and banks. The DNCRP began the process of returning money to customers in January 2022. So far, Tk 407 crore has been refunded, according to the director general of the DNCRP. The newly formed committee aims to expedite the return of the remaining Tk 127 crore.
