On Sunday, the retail price of green chilli surged to Tk 200-240 per kilogram, marking an increase of Tk 40-60 within a day. This spike is attributed to low production and halted imports. Wholesale rates have risen consistently since early May, with prices reaching Tk 190-195 per kilogram at Sadeq Khan Wholesale Market. In areas like Mohammadpur, Dhanmondi, and Palashi, retail prices soared to Tk 240-250 per kilogram. Last year’s market trends, where prices peaked at Tk 600-800 per kilogram, are being mirrored. This surge is aggravated by a month-long drought, which significantly reduced local production. Import restrictions coinciding with the winter crop season further contributed to the scarcity. Bangladesh primarily produces chilli during the winter season, contributing to an annual production of over 0.65 million tonnes, with the winter crop covering 0.55 million tonnes. Similarly, egg prices remained high at Tk 150-165 per dozen, while prices of other essential commodities remained unchanged.
