BCIC, facing gas shortages, has four urea fertilizer plants closed, leading to a shortfall of 2.76 lakh metric tons during peak demand. The government is importing urea at double the cost, incurring an additional 12,000 crore rupees annually. BCIC requires 13,000 crore rupees in subsidies, while owing 2,300 crore rupees to Petrobangla for gas. Each closed factory costs 12-13 crore rupees monthly in maintenance. BCIC’s inability to pay debts exacerbates the situation. With BCIC unable to meet demand, stakeholders fear fertilizer scarcity.
