The Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) will lend $167 million (approximately Tk 20.10 billion) to develop a 220MW solar power plant in Sonagazi, Feni, marking the country’s largest solar facility. The project’s total estimated cost is Tk 21.35 billion, with Tk 1.25 billion funded by the government and EGCB. Per megawatt installation cost is estimated at Tk 96.99 million, lower than previous projects such as the 75MW Sonagazi plant (Tk 116.77 million), 6.55MW Sirajganj plant (Tk 160.31 million), and 100MW Madarganj plant (Tk 137.29 million). The new plant will be built on 699.65 acres of land previously acquired by EGCB. Feasibility studies conducted in 2018 and January 2025 confirmed the project’s viability. The plant aims to boost renewable energy to 10% of Bangladesh’s energy mix, reduce fossil fuel dependence, lower carbon emissions, and promote sustainable economic development.
