After a record-breaking year in 2021, the country’s tea production somewhat decreased 2022, despite rising production costs. According to data from the Bangladesh Tea Board (BTB), the annual tea production was roughly 90.38 million kg in 2022, down from about 90.656 million kg in 2021. The industry stakeholders blamed the decline on unfavorable weather and an indefinite tea workers’ strike.

The cost of producing one kilogram of tea was BDT 200.35 last year, BDT 197.34 in 2021, BDT 173.56 in 2020, BDT 193.40 in 2019, BDT 161.02 in 2018, and BDT 198.73 in 2017. According to the Tea Board, 86.39 million kg of tea were produced in 2020 and 96.07 million kg in 2019.
