An energy expert has claimed that $1 billion worth of gas is stolen annually under the guise of system loss, with current losses at 9.82%. Reducing these losses by half could save $500 million each year and reduce import dependency. System losses arise from issues like meter inaccuracies, tampering, illegal connections, and pipeline leaks. A recent seminar highlighted challenges in Bangladesh’s power and energy sector, including depleting domestic gas fields and increasing energy debt. The seminar discussed the need for improved gas production and exploration, recommending the import of 15 million tonnes of coal by 2030 and better management of energy capacity and costs. Concerns were raised about the economic impact of high fuel costs, gas theft, and inefficiencies, stressing the importance of transparent and competitive practices to ensure energy stability and economic growth.
