The interim government has approved the export of 25,000 tonnes of aromatic rice by 133 companies, including Square Food and Beverage, Pran-RFL Group, and Akij Essentials, each permitted to export 500 tonnes, while others like Ispahani and Tanveer Foods were allowed 400 tonnes. Exports are authorized until September 30 under nine conditions. Bangladesh’s aromatic rice production nearly doubled from 5.79 lakh tonnes in FY 2017–18 to 10.23 lakh tonnes in FY 2023–24, driven by rising domestic and international demand and higher profitability. High-yielding varieties now produce 448–821 kg per bigha, compared to 187–299 kg for traditional types. Naogaon, Rajshahi, and Mymensingh are major production hubs. Aromatic rice exports dropped from $2.88 million in FY 2019–20 to $1.07 million in FY 2021–22 before being banned in FY 2022–23. Exporters, including Pran-RFL, praised the decision and urged the government not to impose abrupt halts in the future.
