Utilizing just 20% of open spaces within eight Export Processing Zones (EPZs) in Bangladesh for solar installations could add 222 megawatts (MW) to the national grid. If 30% of these spaces were used, the potential increase in power generation would rise to over 333MW. The study, conducted by a senior lecturer at East West University, was presented at a roundtable organized by Change Initiative at The Daily Star Centre in Dhaka.
The CEO of Change Initiative emphasized the benefits of expanding net metering to 80% of spaces and household rooftops, which could lead to significant power generation benefits for the country. Net metering allows excess energy generated by solar panels to be sent to the local grid in exchange for credits on monthly electric bills.
