The Ministry of Commerce has permitted 49 businesses to each export 50 tonnes of hilsa to India for the upcoming Durga Puja, which begins on October 9. This follows a September 21 circular approving the export of 3,000 tonnes of hilsa to India, based on a foreign ministry recommendation. The fisheries ministry, initially against the export, usually informs the commerce ministry about such decisions. In fiscal year 2023-24, Bangladesh exported 664.86 tonnes of hilsa to India, valued at $7.71 million, representing less than 1% of the 571,342 tonnes caught that year. In the previous fiscal year, 1,376.42 tonnes of hilsa were exported for $13.68 million, out of 566,593 tonnes caught.
