Titas Gas Transmission and Distribution PLC faces a critical challenge with 70% of its distribution lines either severely deteriorated or expired over 30 years ago. These aging and faulty lines are causing significant gas leaks, leading to wastage and posing life-threatening risks, particularly in densely populated areas like Dhaka, Narayanganj, and Gazipur.
The company has described these deteriorated distribution lines as posing serious risks. Many of these issues are attributed to negligence during construction activities by various service organizations and major construction projects in the capital, which further damage already weakened pipelines. The extent of system loss due to these issues is substantial, with Titas Gas reporting a 10% loss, though experts suggest the actual figure could be over 14%. Outdated pipelines alone contribute 4-5% to this loss.
