The Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) survey revealed that nearly 72% of individuals aged over 15 in Bangladesh did not have an account with a bank or non-bank financial institution (NBFI) in 2023, despite ongoing efforts for financial inclusion. Only 28.3% had such accounts, a slight increase from the previous year’s 26.2%. Experts attribute this low inclusion rate to banking services not meeting the needs of the low-income population, especially in rural areas. The complex requirements for opening accounts also deter many, leading them to opt for microfinance institutions (MFIs) despite higher interest rates. Bangladesh is among the top seven countries with a significant unbanked population, with around 30 million people lacking financial institution or mobile financial service accounts. However, with the rise of mobile banking and digital finance, there is optimism for increased financial inclusion in the future, provided traditional banks adapt to digital banking and regulatory challenges are addressed.
