A Chattogram court has issued a show-cause notice to the Legal and Recovery Division chief of AB Bank for failing to recover Tk1,257 crore in defaulted loans from Ashikur Rahman Laskar, an entrepreneur in the ship-breaking industry. Judge Mujahidur Rahman of Chattogram Artho Rin Adalat (money loan court) directed the AB Bank official to explain why legal action should not be taken for negligence in the loan recovery process. The case, filed on June 18, 2023, involves a loan default by Ashikur, who has since left for Canada. Despite multiple loans and substantial debts owed to various banks, including Tk1,257 crore to AB Bank, Ashikur’s assets have not been seized. The court is investigating the bank’s failure to act on the non-repayment of these significant loans.
