Bangladesh’s power costs have spiked due to a deal with an Indian company, where electricity from their 1,600MW coal plant is imported at Tk14.02 per kilowatt-hour (kWh), compared to Tk7.83 per kWh from India’s electricity exchange market. This deal has pushed the average generation cost in Bangladesh from Tk5.91 per kWh five years ago to Tk11.03 per kWh now, with the cost from the deal alone raising the unit price by 7.69% to Tk8.61. Despite a surplus in generation capacity, Bangladesh faces mounting unpaid bills, adding $100 million monthly to the power bill, leading to calls for the deal’s review.
