Adani’s power purchase agreement has faced controversy due to high coal prices and production costs. The Power Development Board (PDB) raised objections in December 2022, but Adani agreed to reduce coal prices, though costs remain higher than other coal-based plants. Due to foreign exchange issues, many plants are operating below capacity, and technical faults also cause shutdowns. Adani’s plants have the highest coal prices, raising electricity costs by 25% compared to Payra plant. The total cost for purchasing power from Adani’s plants in the last fiscal year was BDT 12,113 crore, leading the government to review the agreement.
