Recent floods in Bangladesh have caused significant agricultural losses estimated at Tk3,346 crore, affecting 1.4 million farmers. The most severe impact was on paddy production, with losses of Tk2,519 crore, and extensive damage to 291,333 hectares of paddy fields and 19,680 hectares of Aman paddy seedbeds.
Vegetables and fisheries also faced severe losses, with Tk2,000 crore in damage reported across the fisheries and livestock sectors. Specifically, the fisheries sector alone experienced losses of Tk1,590.36 crore due to damage to 180,000 ponds and significant losses of fish and shrimp.
The floods have affected 73 upazilas in 11 districts, with 71 deaths and 50.24 lakh people impacted. The roundtable on “Post-Flood Agricultural Management” recommended assessing damage, rehabilitating crops, and supporting farmers with loans and insurance. Experts called for active government involvement and support for affected sectors to facilitate recovery.
