The ongoing Red Sea crisis has led to significant disruptions in global trade, particularly impacting Bangladesh’s apparel sector. The crisis has resulted in a two-week delay, container shortages, and increased freight costs, causing apparel sector to fall at least 20 days behind in meeting lead times compared to its competitors. This has led to the loss of orders, with one company reportedly losing six orders due to lead time issues.
The crisis has also prompted concerns about the potential need for costly airfreight and the acceptance of reduced product prices. Nearly 15% of global seaborne trade passes through the Red Sea, making it a critical route for global trade. The crisis has already created container shortages and led to a significant increase in container shipping prices from Asia to Europe. These disruptions are expected to have a widespread impact on global supply chains, potentially leading to shortages, price increases, and production delays.
