Bangladesh’s apparel exports to the European Union decreased by 4.84% in the first seven months of 2024, amounting to $11.11 billion, down from $11.68 billion in the same period of 2023. This decline is slightly better than the overall decrease of 5.22% in EU imports, which fell to $49.85 billion from $52.60 billion. Competitors like China and Turkey saw declines of 7.34% and 8.55%, respectively, while India’s exports dropped by 1.93% to $2.96 billion. Conversely, Cambodia and Pakistan experienced growth in their RMG exports to the EU, increasing by 10.36% to $2.03 billion and 6.32% to $2.06 billion, respectively. Other countries, such as Sri Lanka and Indonesia, also reported declines of 4.45% and 8.86%. High utility costs, gas shortages, and rising wages have weakened Bangladesh’s competitive position, while energy shortages have limited production capacity and delayed raw material procurement, causing shipment delays of 20-25 days. This situation raises concerns about maintaining competitiveness in the dynamic EU market amid shifts in sourcing preferences.
