In FY24, Bangladesh’s apparel exports to India declined sharply by 23.11% to $728.85 million, compared to the previous fiscal year. Local exporters attribute this downturn to Indian buyers’ disinterest and pricing strategies that undercut production costs. Meanwhile, Bangladesh maintained growth in non-traditional markets like Japan and Australia, achieving a 6.47% overall export increase to $8.19 billion. Industry insiders note challenges such as longer lead times exacerbated by energy shortages, which hinder timely shipments and drive Indian buyers towards Vietnam and China. Despite these setbacks, exporters targeting international brands remain optimistic amidst a challenging global economic environment affecting Indian consumer spending and import dynamics.
