Inflation eased slightly in August but remained above 10%, continuing to impact consumer purchasing power. The Consumer Price Index (CPI) for August was 10.49%, down from 11.66% in July, according to Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) data. Despite this decrease, overall inflation stayed above 9% for the 18th consecutive month.
Factors contributing to the dip include a stabilizing political environment and reduced extortion from ruling party members affecting food supply. Food inflation dropped to 11.36% from 14.10%, while non-food inflation increased slightly to 9.74% from 9.68%.
Economists noted that while the decline in inflation is encouraging, it is too early to determine if the trend will continue. The central bank’s monetary tightening and recent government measures, including reducing import duties on essential goods, aim to combat inflation, though significant improvements may take time.
