Bangladesh’s Fisheries and Livestock Minister announced that the country has advanced to the second position globally in freshwater fish production, surpassing China, which now ranks third. This achievement was highlighted using data from the latest FAO report, based on 2022 figures. Bangladesh’s freshwater fish production reached 1.32 million tons, up from 1.25 million tons two years ago, while China’s production declined from 1.46 million tons to 1.16 million tons during the same period. Bangladesh also ranked fifth in fish caught from enclosed water bodies, 14th in marine fish production, and eighth in crustacean production. The minister credited this success to government initiatives that led Bangladesh to achieve fish production self-sufficiency in the 2016-17 fiscal year, after 46 years of independence. He expressed optimism about further progress in the fisheries sector under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, thanking her for support.
