The Bangladesh Bank has eased loan classification and provisioning rules for the CMSME sector to boost investments and create jobs. According to a circular issued on December 4, financial institutions must now maintain 5% provisioning for sub-standard CMSME loans, 20% for doubtful loans, and 50% for bad or loss loans. This is significantly lower than the rates for non-CMSME loans, which remain at 20%, 50%, and 100%, respectively. Additionally, “Special Mention Account” loans require 0.25% provisioning for CMSME loans, compared to 5% for others. The central bank stated that this adjustment aims to encourage financial institutions to support CMSME growth.
